Coffee... and grace

It was 11:30 at night and I was on the phone with my Mom, pouring out the troubles of that day, which had included tantrums, tears, spilled raisins, potty accidents, ungracious strangers, a downed power line on a one lane access road that prevented us from returning home, melted ice cream, no baby wipes with great need of them, vomit, no electricity once we got home, no movie, tuna for dinner... you know, one of those kinds of days. Finished venting, I added for emphasis, "It was hard." My dear mom was appropriately sympathetic and said she remembered how hard it was when we were all so little and needy. She said, "I don't know how you do it!" I thought, "I don't do it... each day is a miracle," but instead replied, "Coffee and grace."

My name is Heather and I'm married to Cameron Wathen, the love of my life and the father of my four beautiful children: two boys and two girls. All born two years apart, they change back and forth each year from odd numbers to even, making things very simple in the age department. They are all currently odd, which is in no way is a commentary on their personalities, but may explain several things! I have been home educating for three years, and really enjoy creating my own curriculum plan based on the Bible. We are going chronologically through history, centered around the Biblical account, and it is so much fun! Timeline
Cameron is the pastor of Calvary Chapel Victoria, a non-denominational church-plant that began this September; he has been in the ministry for the past ten years having served in various pastoral roles, including senior pastor, associate pastor, youth pastor, and worship leader.

As a family, we love to spend time out in God's creation, and are outdoor enthusiasts; Cam introduced me to nature walks, kayaking, hiking, camping, bicycling, etc. while we were courting, (I was a city girl), and now it's a family passion... although it may be some years before the baby does the West Coast Trail!
We are all avid readers and family story time is a favorite part of our daily routine. Hot drinks, especially tea, coffee, or my own herbal blends, are a staple at our house and I truly enjoy the whole cozy custom. We became hooked after moving to Canada from California (via Mississippi) nine years ago.  Chances are, if you come over, you will soon have a hot cup in your hands.
Somewhat artsy, I love colour and enjoy working with materials that vibrate with life, like watercolour paints, coloured pencils, stained glass, gemstones, and fabric. I also have a penchant for writing... but mostly after midnight!

My heart's desire is to glorify God with my life. As a young adult, I surrendered my future to God, offering Him my dreams, desires, hopes, and plans. I had read several missionary biographies that had really inspired me, including Brother Andrew and Corrie Ten Boom, and truly desired to give up my life for the sake of the gospel. Enrolled and prepared to attend a university for a degree in graphic design, I heard the Lord tell me to withdraw my admission, thus forfeiting several scholarships that had already been applied. I responded in faith and obeyed, and within a week was led to attend Calvary Chapel Bible College.
Furthermore, while camping with some friends the summer before college, I heard the Lord call me to the mission field. I immediately began preparing myself for foreign missions. I sold many of my things and kept only the clothes that seemed practical for ministry. I figured out how to do my hair without products or a hairdryer, and cut down on makeup, all in anticipation of my calling. Once at Bible College, I met my husband and together we began to prepare for a life spent in the service of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Our hearts' desire is to magnify the Lord and exalt His name together (Psalm 34:3). This has been our sole aim these past ten years that we have been married and serving Him together in the not so exotic mission field of North America. As it turns out, I can still use a hair dryer and buy mascara at London Drugs, to the glory of God! People need Jesus everywhere, and Victoria is the very place we have found ourselves in God's sovereign design. I love Victoria and it's people with all my heart, and am overjoyed to be serving my Saviour in this city!
As John Piper said in his book Let The Nations Be Glad, "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him." Or as the Westminster catechism states, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever"! I never could have imagined how delightful it would be to give up my life to glorify my God!
"For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it." (Mark 8:35)
