Give Me Strength

This past year, 2012, I saw a breakdown of my overall health, complete with doctor mandated rest and recovery period. I felt total exhaustion: physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually... I was weak. In looking back through my journal during that time, I discovered this poem penned one tired afternoon. I remember writing it; it was hard to even hold the pen.  Today, with energy and strength coursing through my body, soul, and spirit, I can only rejoice to see God's grace and healing in action.

Thank you, Lord, for the season of exhaustion; I learned a dependence upon You that went deeper than I knew possible. Thank You, too, for renewed strength to finish the race! Amen.

Give me Strength

When my hand can no longer hold the plough...
Give me strength, LORD, give me strength.
When my legs falter and my stomach quakes...
Give me strength, LORD, give me strength.
When sweat rolls down from my furrowed brow...
Give me strength, LORD, give me strength.
When my muscles burn and my whole body shakes...
Give me strength, LORD, give me strength.

From the depth of my soul, to the thoughts of my head,
My emotions seek words to convey with my pen.
Weary of heart and tired of soul,
I press toward the mark and strain toward the goal.
When have I felt such weakness inside?
Have I ever before been so stretched and so tried?

O, GOD be my strength in my hour of need!
Carry me, hold me, lift me, I plead!
My heart and my soul, my body and mind,
My entire being is so very tired!
Be that in me, which I cannot be;
I can do all things when You strengthen me!
